Rugby great Chris Henry's life history

Chris Henry (May 17, 1983 – December 17, 2009) was an American football wide receiver who played five seasons in the National Football League for the Cincinnati Bengals. He played college football at West Virginia and was drafted by the Bengals in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft.

Henry was involved in a string of legal troubles during his professional career, which include several arrests for such offenses as driving under the influence, marijuana possession, assault, and criminal damage. He was suspended for the first four games of the 2008 season.

Early years

Henry was born to Carolyn Lee and David Henry in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. He attended Belle Chasse High School where he was named New Orleans small schools offensive player of the year during his senior year. During that season the Fighting Cardinals made it to the Louisiana AAA State championship game, which was played at the Louisiana Superdome. Henry also excelled in basketball and track.

College career

Henry enrolled at West Virginia University in 2002, spending his first season as a redshirt. In 2003, he earned Big East Conference freshman of the year and All-Big East second-team honors for catching 41 passes and gaining 1,006 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns. He also became the second player in school history to record over 1,000 receiving yards in one season (behind David Saunders), and his 24.5 yards per reception are the third most in a season in school history. Henry's best game was a career-high performance of 209 yards and two touchdowns against Syracuse. His career-long reception came against Rutgers that season, an 83-yard reception.

In 2004, Henry started seven games and caught 52 passes for 872 yards with 12 touchdowns. After catching three passes in a 30–18 loss to Florida State in the 2005 Gator Bowl, Henry announced that he would enter the 2005 NFL Draft. Henry's 12 touchdowns ties him with Darius Reynaud for the school's single-season touchdown record. while his 52 receptions are the eighth most in a season

During Henry's sophomore season, he was ejected from a game at Rutgers University due to multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and was suspended for the season finale against the University of Pittsburgh. His former Mountaineers coach, Rich Rodriguez, stated that he was "an embarrassment to himself and the program" for his conduct.

Henry majored in athletic coaching education.

Accomplishments

Henry was the third player in Mountaineers' history to average more than twenty yards per catch for his career. Henry's 1,878 career receiving yards is eighth most in school history, while his 93 receptions are the 14th most. His 22 touchdown receptions are also second most in school history. Henry's six career 100-yard receiving games is tied for third most in school history.

Death

On December 16, 2009, Henry was involved in a car accident in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he sustained grave injuries. Charlotte police stated that Henry fell out the back of a moving truck driven by his fiancee, Loleini Tonga, while they were engaged in a domestic dispute. On December 17, 2009, Charlotte police announced that Henry had died at 6:36 a.m. ET. On December 19, police confirmed that Henry died of blunt force trauma to the head. No charges had been filed against his fiancee by this date, but neither had she been cleared by the police. To honor Henry, every game of Week 15 (December 17-21) in the NFL began with a moment of silence before kickoff.

Jordan was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Deloris (née Peoples), who worked in banking, and James R. Jordan, Sr., an equipment supervisor. His family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, when he was a toddler. Jordan attended Emsley A. Laney High School in Wilmington, where he anchored his athletic career by playing baseball, football, and basketball. He tried out for the varsity basketball team during his sophomore year, but at 5'11" (1.80 m), he was deemed too short to play at that level. His taller friend, Harvest Leroy Smith, was the only sophomore to make the team.

Motivated to prove his worth, Jordan became the star of Laney's junior varsity squad, and tallied several 40 point games. The following summer, he grew four inches (10 cm) and trained rigorously. Upon earning a spot on the varsity roster, Jordan averaged about 20 points per game over his final two seasons of high school play. As a senior, he was selected to the McDonald's All-American Team after averaging a triple-double: 29.2 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 10.1 assists.

In 1981, Jordan earned a basketball scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Omega Psi Phi and majored in cultural geography. As a freshman in coach Dean Smith's team-oriented system, he was named ACC Freshman of the Year after he averaged 13.4 points per game (ppg) on 53.4% shooting (field goal percentage). He made the game-winning jump shot in the 1982 NCAA Championship game against Georgetown, which was led by future NBA rival Patrick Ewing. Jordan later described this shot as the major turning point in his basketball career. During his three seasons at North Carolina, he averaged 17.7 ppg on 54.0% shooting, and added 5.0 rebounds per game (rpg). After winning the Naismith and the Wooden College Player of the Year awards in 1984, Jordan left North Carolina one year before his scheduled graduation to enter the 1984 NBA Draft. The Chicago Bulls selected Jordan with the third overall pick, after Hakeem Olajuwon (Houston Rockets) and Sam Bowie (Portland Trail Blazers). Jordan returned to North Carolina to complete his degree in 1986.

Enraged over reports of her husband's philandering ways and set off by the discovery of an "incriminating" text message, Elin Nordegren smashed Tiger Woods in the face with a 9-iron on Thanksgiving Day and then chased a bleeding and woozy Woods as he fled from his Florida home, a prominent sportswriter relayed in a Boxing Day blog that caught the attention of celebrity gadfly Perez Hilton. From there, it went viral. Problem is, it likely wasn't true.

Furman Bisher, a retired sports columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution who has covered every Kentucky Derby since 1950, posted on his blog, what he said was a "legitimate message" he received from a "trustworthy journalist" he has known for years.

The source told Bisher that Woods wasn't home when Florida State Troopers came to question him following the crash outside his home because he had already been whisked away to Phoenix, where he underwent reconstructive surgery to repair the damage to his face, which included a gash to the right side near the nose, a broken facial bone and damaged teeth.

According to Bisher's source, Tiger was kicking back and watching football after turkey dinner on that fateful day, texting his alleged mistress Rachel Uchitel about the National Enquirer story that trumpeted their alleged affair, when things began to unravel for the world's No. 1 golfer.

A friend of Woods invited him to play poker and he left for the game, leaving his cell phone behind, replete with a text message from Uchitel he neglected to delete, according to Bisher's source.

The story continued that when Woods returned about midnight, Nordegren confronted Woods and eventually blindsided him with a golf club, chasing him through the house, causing significant damage to the interior of their home, and then chased Tiger as he fled in the Escalade, smashing out the windows.

It was a good golf tale, but we all know how many of those are lies.

Internet hoax debunkers Snopes.com aren't sure what to believe as of the time of writing, claiming the information has been circulating on the internet since mid-December.

"At this point, with hard information lacking, we can only engage in conjecture," said Snopes staff recently, adding, "the first aspect of speculation is the account's purported origins: in true urban legend-like fashion, it's an anonymous account based on information supposedly obtained from someone who plays golf with an 'insider' who knows Tiger Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg (who presumably heard it from his client). A long chain of transmission doesn't necessarily invalidate the account, but we note that (as exemplified by the children's game of "telephone") as information becomes further removed from its original source and passes through more hands it generally becomes less reliable."

Snopes continues that, in their opinion the account is a mix of "truthiy, falsity, exaggeration and speculation."

Melbourne: Australian cricket skipper Ricky Ponting hailed Mitchell johnson as the world's premier quick.

Johnson, on a hat-trick in his first over against Pakistan on Wednesday, now has a staggering 63 Test wickets at 27.42 in a year where his fortunes fluctuated wildly.

He has claimed 17 more wickets than Test cricket's next best performed quick, England young gun Stuart Broad.

It now seems hard to believe that Johnson could hardly hit the pitch during the second Ashes Test at Lord's and was on the brink of being dropped.

The masterstroke was Ponting taking the new ball out of the fast bowler's hands in England. It gave Johnson more freedom and less pressure and also helped the left-armer become a dangerous weapon by swinging the older ball.

"I honestly feel one of the big things for Mitch is the fact he's not bowling with the new ball," Ponting said.

"We've seen at different times how dangerous and damaging he can be with the new ball, but I think we've seen here in conditions where the old ball does a little bit as well, that's when he's at his most effective," Ponting added.

"I spoke to him in India in the one-day series about that fact, that he fits in our team best as that first-change bowler and he's proven in this game here that with an old ball he's dangerous. He'll continue to change things, he'll continue trying to work on becoming a very good new-ball bowler as well," Ponting said.

Despite coming on at first-change behind Peter Siddle and Doug Bollinger, a rejuvenated Johnson insists he remains the spearhead of the Australian attack.

"I'm still the leader of the attack even though I'm not taking the new ball," Johnson declared.

"I am just thinking more positively about my bowling and just have the confident to go out there and do what I want to do and not worry about another thing," he said.

Andrew "Joey" Johns (born 19 May 1974 in Cessnock, New South Wales) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer of the 1990s and 2000s who is considered by some critics one of the greatest players of all time, and was heralded as the world's best halfback for a number of years. He captained the Newcastle Knights in the National Rugby League and participated in the team's first two premiership victories in 1997 and 2001, playing a club record 249 games for the Knights. Johns also represented his country at 2 World Cups, and on 1 Kangaroo tour, playing in total 21 Test matches for the national side. He played in 23 games for New South Wales in State of Origin (captaining the side to a series win in 2003), and twice played for the Country Origin side in 1995 and 1996.

Johns announced his retirement from rugby league on 10 April 2007 at the age of 32. This followed a long run of injuries, the last of which was a bulging disc in his neck which forced his retirement due to the risk of serious spinal injury from further heavy contact. In The Daily Telegraph on 11 April 2007, one day after retiring, some of the game's greats, including other "Immortals" called for him to be made an immortal of the game. Andrew Johns is one of only two players to have won the Golden Boot Award more than once and is the only player to have won the Dally M Medal for best player in the NRL three times. He finished his career as the highest points scorer in Australian first grade premiership history with 2,176 points.
In 2008 Johns was named as the 'Best Player of the Last 30 Years' by Rugby League Week and was also named as halfback of the New South Wales and Australian teams of the century.

Early Days

Andrew Johns began playing junior rugby league in his home town of Cessnock, New South Wales. At an early age it was evident he had plenty of playing ability and Johns joined the Newcastle Knights junior ranks at 15 years of age in 1989. Four years later, at 19 years of age, the opportunity at first grade presented itself to Johns as he was tested off the bench during the 1993 season in a handful of games. The following year in the last pre-season trial for the 1994 season, Matthew Rodwell, Newcastle's then-regular halfback sustained a knee injury handing Johns his golden opportunity. Subsequently he was named in the starting line-up against the South Sydney Rabbitohs and in his debut match made an immediate impact as he amassed 23 points and was awarded the 'Man-of-the-Match'. He soon formed a winning partnership with his older brother, Matthew Johns, who had played five-eighth at the Knights since 1991.
