Carlos Tevez proved him again that he is the best

Whatever the rights and wrongs of Manchester City's decision to sack Mark Hughes, Roberto Mancini has managed to win as many Premier League games in three days as his predecessor did in his final 12 weeks. This victory was not quite as routine as the scoreline suggests, with Wolves proving awkward opponents until the final 20 minutes, but Mancini was entitled to cherish a second successive clean sheet and City's first away win in four months.

The Italian's decision to drop Robinho and replace him with Craig Bellamy was totally vindicated, with the Welshman an effervescent presence. He created the first goal and made life uncomfortable for the Wolves defence throughout with his searing pace, although it was Carlos Tevez who exuded a ruthless touch in front of goal. The City forward scored twice to take his tally to eight in seven matches.

Between those two strikes the substitute Javier Garrido, who was making only his second appearance of the season, curled a wonderful free-kick from 25 yards around the outside of the wall and inside the near post of the embarrassed Marcus Hahnemann. It was a sublime piece of skill and effectively killed the game, although Wolves were furious Bellamy had not been ruled offside before the free-kick was awarded.

Bellamy, who had started wide on the left but was pushed alongside Tevez in an early tactical change, was in an offside position when the ball was pumped towards Jody Craddock. However, rather than let the ball run through, which would have prompted the assistant referee to raise his flag, the Wolves central defender opted to head, enabling Bellamy to come back onside and join the attack again when City seized possession.

McCarthy was apoplectic at the time but refused to elaborate afterwards, perhaps mindful that the officials had interpreted the rules correctly. "If I talk, it might lose me a few quid," said the Wolves manager. "I've put in my report what I thought. It will be up to the powers that be to say what they think of my words. But I thought we played well tonight. Up until the second goal we were causing them problems."

While the Wolves manager's disappointment was understandable, City ultimately highlighted the chasm between the two sides in the closing stages. Some of their attacking football in that period was breathtaking, in particular when the impressive Martin Petrov and Bellamy combined in the 82nd minute, their first-time passes across the width of the pitch releasing Tevez. This time, however, the striker was unable to find his range, dinking wide of Hahnemann and denying City a champagne moment.

His first goal had arrived following a bright Wolves opening, when the home side's high-tempo approach allied to the aerial threat posed by Chris Iwelumo threatened to make life difficult for City. There was, however, always a danger that City would inflict damage on the counter-attack with their pace going forward and, moments before Tevez struck, Bellamy should have opened the scoring when he volleyed over from inside the six-yard box. He wasted no time in atoning for this profligacy.

Little more than 60 seconds later Bellamy escaped on the left, racing on to Petrov's slide-rule pass before eluding Craddock by letting the ball run through his legs. Cutting in from the left he looked up before pulling the ball back into the path of Tevez, whose shot from 12 yards would surely have been saved by Hahnemann but for Berra's deflection which took the ball on a different course and into the back of the Wolves net.

Tevez was his usual ubiquitous self and even turned up on his own goalline to head George Elokobi's far-post effort off the line moments before the interval. That reprieve should have been followed with a second City goal shortly after the restart but Bellamy, following more superb interplay between the rejuvenated Petrov and Tevez, flicked the ball wide with the outside of his right boot as Hahnemann narrowed the angle.

Doyle squandered Wolves' best opening, when Shay Given saved at his feet, six minutes before Garrido's brilliant strike. Thereafter it was left to Tevez to seal another productive day's work for Mancini, the forward drilling home from the edge of the penalty area after Robinho, a late replacement for Petrov, sliced a crossfield pass to his feet.

"They put on a sub that cost more than the club," said McCarthy. "That kind of puts life in perspective for me."

Robinho given rest for a short time Roberto Mancini era

Robinho was not in the team tonight, relegated to the bench and sat huddled against the cold before coming on as a substitute for the last five minutes. Within a minute the most expensive player in English football had supplied the pass for Carlos Tevez to score the third goal but, even so, there was the overwhelming sense that Mancini was being benevolent when he said he had left out the Brazilian simply to spare him from the threat of fatigue as City played their second game in three days. It had felt more like a demonstration of strength from the new manager.

Mancini had talked of Robinho "making the history of this club" when he held his introductory press conference just before Christmas but the Brazilian was disappointing, to say the least, when the new era got underway with a 2-0 defeat of Stoke City last weekend. Robinho's desire is to leave and Craig Bellamy, his replacement for this match, flourished even if he did miss two great chances.

Bellamy is in the form of his life and the manner in which he set up the first goal, accelerating away from Jody Craddock on the left wing before crossing for Tevez to score with a deflection off the luckless Christophe Berra, was particularly impressive and it was no surprise that Mancini identified him for special acclaim after what has been a difficult period for the Wales international.

Bellamy was so upset about the sacking of Hughes that he considered his own position at the club but that now seems to be behind him judging by his words after collecting the man-of-the-match champagne. "On a personal level I have great affection for Mark Hughes but at the end of the day that's the nature of the game and nothing surprises me in football," he said of the change of manager. "This is a club that is definitely going places. With this group of players and the management staff, it's going to happen. So I want to be a part of it for as long as I can."

Mancini was equally effusive about a player he joked was "not my friend" but who seems to have adapted seamlessly to the Italian's new tactics. "I think Craig is a strong character, a good player and a good man and, for me, it's good that he stays with us," Mancini said. "I'm happy to have difficult players. I played for 20 years and I know very well the way big players work. I don't have a problem with that. If the player has technical quality, is strong and a good character, these are the most important things."

The new manager will be glad that talk of dressing-room mutiny has been exaggerated and that his team, on the whole, seem to have taken on board his instructions. City have now kept successive clean sheets, having previously managed only one in the league since August. The team had conceded three goals in each of Hughes's last three league matches and Mancini quickly identified it as a weakness.

"We have to concentrate for 95 minutes in every match. If you don't concede a goal, it's important. We've worked with the defence for only four days in training because in the last three days we have not had time but it is already much better."

Shane Mark Williams (born 26 February 1977) is a Welsh rugby union player who plays as a wing for the Ospreys and Wales, and who can also play scrum-half. Williams is notable for his well-known side-step, acceleration and his ability to find open space through opposition defence. Shane has been described as one of the most exciting wingers in the world. Williams is currently third on the international all-time Test try scoring list.

In 2008, Williams was selected as the IRB International Player of the Year.

Early life

Williams was born in Morriston, near Swansea, but grew up in Glanamman in the Amman Valley. He picked up his first rugby ball while still in primary school, and was always small for his age, even going into secondary school at Amman Valley Comprehensive School. Told that he was too small to play rugby, Williams took up football instead, playing for Cwmamman United A.F.C.; in his first appearance for the club's junior team, Williams had to play in goal as no one else would volunteer to take the position. Williams' former junior football coach, Alun Rees, remembers him as a "superb goalkeeper", but notes that he could also play outfield. Williams played for Cwmamman United up to the senior level, while only playing rugby sporadically, and admits that, at the time, football was "[his] main sport". However, on the day of Cwmamman United's cup final, Williams was invited to play rugby with his friends at Amman United RFC; Amman United ended up winning by around 80 points, with Williams scoring five tries.

Personal life

In August 2005, a holiday to Cyprus made the headlines when Shane Williams was erroneously held over an assault. The police lost his passport; his lawyer described the whole incident as a "total stitch-up"; and on his return to Wales, Williams suggested that he should have spent his holiday in Tenby instead.

On 23 December 2005, Williams married his childhood sweetheart Gail Branwen Lacey, whom he had met at Amman Valley school 14 years previously, at Twyn Church in Garnant. The couple's first child, Georgie, was born on 7 November, 2006.

Rugby great Chris Henry's life history

Chris Henry (May 17, 1983 – December 17, 2009) was an American football wide receiver who played five seasons in the National Football League for the Cincinnati Bengals. He played college football at West Virginia and was drafted by the Bengals in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft.

Henry was involved in a string of legal troubles during his professional career, which include several arrests for such offenses as driving under the influence, marijuana possession, assault, and criminal damage. He was suspended for the first four games of the 2008 season.

Early years

Henry was born to Carolyn Lee and David Henry in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. He attended Belle Chasse High School where he was named New Orleans small schools offensive player of the year during his senior year. During that season the Fighting Cardinals made it to the Louisiana AAA State championship game, which was played at the Louisiana Superdome. Henry also excelled in basketball and track.

College career

Henry enrolled at West Virginia University in 2002, spending his first season as a redshirt. In 2003, he earned Big East Conference freshman of the year and All-Big East second-team honors for catching 41 passes and gaining 1,006 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns. He also became the second player in school history to record over 1,000 receiving yards in one season (behind David Saunders), and his 24.5 yards per reception are the third most in a season in school history. Henry's best game was a career-high performance of 209 yards and two touchdowns against Syracuse. His career-long reception came against Rutgers that season, an 83-yard reception.

In 2004, Henry started seven games and caught 52 passes for 872 yards with 12 touchdowns. After catching three passes in a 30–18 loss to Florida State in the 2005 Gator Bowl, Henry announced that he would enter the 2005 NFL Draft. Henry's 12 touchdowns ties him with Darius Reynaud for the school's single-season touchdown record. while his 52 receptions are the eighth most in a season

During Henry's sophomore season, he was ejected from a game at Rutgers University due to multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and was suspended for the season finale against the University of Pittsburgh. His former Mountaineers coach, Rich Rodriguez, stated that he was "an embarrassment to himself and the program" for his conduct.

Henry majored in athletic coaching education.

Accomplishments

Henry was the third player in Mountaineers' history to average more than twenty yards per catch for his career. Henry's 1,878 career receiving yards is eighth most in school history, while his 93 receptions are the 14th most. His 22 touchdown receptions are also second most in school history. Henry's six career 100-yard receiving games is tied for third most in school history.

Death

On December 16, 2009, Henry was involved in a car accident in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he sustained grave injuries. Charlotte police stated that Henry fell out the back of a moving truck driven by his fiancee, Loleini Tonga, while they were engaged in a domestic dispute. Internet hoax called Tiger Woods in the face with a 9-iron ...

Enraged over reports of her husband's philandering ways and set off by the discovery of an "incriminating" text message, Elin Nordegren smashed Tiger Woods in the face with a 9-iron on Thanksgiving Day and then chased a bleeding and woozy Woods as he fled from his Florida home, a prominent sportswriter relayed in a Boxing Day blog that caught the attention of celebrity gadfly Perez Hilton. From there, it went viral. Problem is, it likely wasn't true.

Furman Bisher, a retired sports columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution who has covered every Kentucky Derby since 1950, posted on his blog, what he said was a "legitimate message" he received from a "trustworthy journalist" he has known for years.

The source told Bisher that Woods wasn't home when Florida State Troopers came to question him following the crash outside his home because he had already been whisked away to Phoenix, where he underwent reconstructive surgery to repair the damage to his face, which included a gash to the right side near the nose, a broken facial bone and damaged teeth.

According to Bisher's source, Tiger was kicking back and watching football after turkey dinner on that fateful day, texting his alleged mistress Rachel Uchitel about the National Enquirer story that trumpeted their alleged affair, when things began to unravel for the world's No. 1 golfer.

A friend of Woods invited him to play poker and he left for the game, leaving his cell phone behind, replete with a text message from Uchitel he neglected to delete, according to Bisher's source.

The story continued that when Woods returned about midnight, Nordegren confronted Woods and eventually blindsided him with a golf club, chasing him through the house, causing significant damage to the interior of their home, and then chased Tiger as he fled in the Escalade, smashing out the windows.

It was a good golf tale, but we all know how many of those are lies.

Internet hoax debunkers Snopes.com aren't sure what to believe as of the time of writing, claiming the information has been circulating on the internet since mid-December.

"At this point, with hard information lacking, we can only engage in conjecture," said Snopes staff recently, adding, "the first aspect of speculation is the account's purported origins: in true urban legend-like fashion, it's an anonymous account based on information supposedly obtained from someone who plays golf with an 'insider' who knows Tiger Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg (who presumably heard it from his client). A long chain of transmission doesn't necessarily invalidate the account, but we note that (as exemplified by the children's game of "telephone") as information becomes further removed from its original source and passes through more hands it generally becomes less reliable."

Snopes continues that, in their opinion the account is a mix of "truthiy, falsity, exaggeration and speculation."

"I honestly feel one of the big things for Mitch is the fact he's not bowling with the new ball," Ponting said.

"We've seen at different times how dangerous and damaging he can be with the new ball, but I think we've seen here in conditions where the old ball does a little bit as well, that's when he's at his most effective," Ponting added.

"I spoke to him in India in the one-day series about that fact, that he fits in our team best as that first-change bowler and he's proven in this game here that with an old ball he's dangerous. He'll continue to change things, he'll continue trying to work on becoming a very good new-ball bowler as well," Ponting said.

Despite coming on at first-change behind Peter Siddle and Doug Bollinger, a rejuvenated Johnson insists he remains the spearhead of the Australian attack.

Steven George Gerrard, (born 30 May 1980), is an English footballer who plays for English Premier League club Liverpool and the England national team. The case was adjourned until 20 March when the assault charge was dropped but Gerrard was required to attend Liverpool Crown Court to face trial for affray. On 3 April, Gerrard pleaded not guilty.

The case went to trial in Liverpool Crown Court. Gerrard's co-defendants pleaded guilty before the trial but Gerrard maintained his innocence. Gerrard admitted hitting Marcus McGee but claimed it was in self defence and on July 24, Gerrard was found not guilty by the jury. Following the verdict, Gerrard said he was looking forward to getting back to playing football and putting the experience behind him.

Early life

Didier Drogba was born in Côte d'Ivoire and at the age of five he was sent to France by his parents to live with his uncle, Michel Goba, a professional footballer. However, Drogba soon became homesick and returned to Abidjan after three years. His mother nicknamed him "Tito", after president Josip Broz Tito of Yugoslavia whom she admired greatly. He played football every day in a car park in the city but his return to Côte d'Ivoire was short lived. Both of his parents lost their jobs and he again returned to live with his uncle. A century at Adelaide secured his spot, a follow-up hundred in Perth confirmed his future, and by the end of the summer he was named vice-captain of the one-day side, although a hip problem ruined his immediate leadership aspirations. Recovering for the World Cup, he slotted in at No. 4 and finished tenth on the tournament's run-scoring list with 436 at 87.20, a haul enhanced by the limited batting time allowed by Hayden, Gilchrist and Ponting. Sachin's early years and personal life

Tendulkar was born in Bombay (now Mumbai). His father, Ramesh Tendulkar, a Marathi novelist, named Tendulkar after his favourite music director, Sachin Dev Burman. Tendulkar's elder brother Ajit encouraged him to play cricket. Tendulkar has two other siblings: a brother Nitin, and sister Savitai.

Tendulkar attended Sharadashram Vidyamandir (High School), where he began his cricketing career under the guidance of his coach and mentor, Ramakant Achrekar. During his school days he attended the MRF Pace Foundation to train as a fast bowler, but Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee, who took a world record 355 Test wickets, was unimpressed, suggesting that Tendulkar focus on his batting instead.

When he was young, Tendulkar would practice for hours on end in the nets. If he became exhausted, Achrekar would put a one-Rupee-coin on the top of the stumps, and the bowler who dismissed Tendulkar would get the coin. If Tendulkar passed the whole session without getting dismissed, the coach would give him the coin. Tendulkar now considers the 13 coins he won then as some of his most prized possessions.

While at school, he developed a reputation as a child prodigy. He had become a common conversation point in Mumbai circles, where there were suggestions already that he would become one of the greats. His season in 1988 was extraordinary, with Tendulkar scoring a century in every innings he played. He was involved in an unbroken 664-run partnership in a Lord Harris Shield inter-school game in 1988 with friend and team mate Vinod Kambli, who would also go on to represent India. The destructive pair reduced one bowler to tears and made the rest of the opposition unwilling to continue the game. Tendulkar scored 326* in this innings and scored over a thousand runs in the tournament. This was a record partnership in any form of cricket until 2006, when it was broken by two under-13 batsmen in a match held at Hyderabad in India.

When he was 14, Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar gave him a pair of his own ultra light pads. "It was the greatest source of encouragement for me," he said nearly 20 years later after surpassing Gavaskar's top world record of 34 Test centuries. In 1995, Sachin Tendulkar married Anjali (born November 10, 1967), a paediatrician and daughter of Gujarati industrialist Anand Mehta. They have two children, Sara (born October 12, 1997), and Arjun (born September 24, 1999).

Tendulkar sponsors 200 underprivileged children every year through Apnalaya, a Mumbai-based NGO associated with his mother-in-law, Annaben Mehta.

Michael also holds the F1 records for: most career wins (91), most wins in a season, most career pole positions, most points during a season (148 in 2004), most consecutive world championships (5), most consecutive race wins (2004), most podium finsihes (154), most laps leading, most fastest laps (76), plus several others!

Michael was at one point the highest paid racing driver in the world and second highest earning sportsman in the world, earning a reported $80 million US in 2004 ($40m of which was his salary from Ferrari). His younger brother Ralf became the third highest paid driver in Formula 1 in 1999, and his pay after the 2000 season was raised to US$15.5 million.

Early life

Sharapova was born in 1987 to Yuri and Elena, ethnic Russians, in the town of Nyagan' in Siberia, Russia. Her parents moved from Gomel, Belarus after the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986 affected the region. When Sharapova was two, the family moved to Sochi where her father befriended Aleksandr Kafelnikov, whose son Yevgeny would go on to become a Grand Slam champion. Aleksandr gave Sharapova her first tennis racket at the age of four, whereupon she began practicing regularly with her father in a local park.

At the age of six, Sharapova attended a tennis clinic in Moscow run by Martina Navrátilová, who recommended professional training at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida, which had previously trained players such as Andre Agassi, Monica Seles and Anna Kournikova. Sharapova and her father, neither of whom could speak English, moved to Florida in 1994. Visa restrictions prevented Sharapova's mother from joining them for two years. In 1995, she was signed by IMG and finally enrolled in the academy.

Roger Federer (born 8 August 1981) is a Swiss professional tennis player. Many sports analysts, tennis critics, former and current players consider Federer to be the greatest tennis player of all time.

Childhood and personal life

Federer was born in Binningen, near Basel, to Swiss national Robert Federer and South Africa-born Lynette Du Rand. He holds both Swiss and South African citizenship. He grew up in suburban Münchenstein, near Basel, close to the French-German borders and Federer speaks Swiss German, German, French and English fluently. He was raised as a Catholic and met Pope Benedict XVI while playing the 2006 Internazionali BNL d'Italia tournament in Rome. Like all male Swiss citizens, Federer was subject to compulsory military service in the Swiss Armed Forces. However, in 2003 he was deemed unfit due to a long-standing back problem and was subsequently not required to fulfill his obligations.

Federer is married to former Women's Tennis Association player Mirka Vavrinec. They met while competing for Switzerland in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Vavrinec retired from the tour in 2002 because of a foot injury and has since been working as Federer's public relations manager. They were married in Basel on 11 April 2009, surrounded by a small group of close friends and family at Wenkenhof Villa (municipality of Riehen). Federer supports various charities. He established the Roger Federer Foundation in 2003 to help disadvantaged people and to promote sports. In 2005, he auctioned his racquet from his US Open championship to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. He was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador by UNICEF in 2006. Since then, he has visited South Africa and Tamil Nadu, one of the worst tsunami-affected areas in India. He has also appeared in UNICEF public messages to raise public awareness of AIDS.
